The following are scholarship opportunities for students of UCOL Whanganui.

Scholarships closing January - June

General Scholarships

  • Gary Reid Memorial Scholarship - available to a student facing significant challenges in undertaking their studies, and who demostrates a high level of commitment to completion. The grant must be put towards good use in completing one's studies. $1000. Closes March.
Education

  • Child Forum Men in ECE Invitation Award - this award welcomes men into the early childhood care and education profession. Applicants must be male, studying towards a degree/diploma in early childhood education, and have enrolled within the last 60 days.  $400.
  • TeachNZ Early Childhood Scholarships - open to people entering study into their initial teaching qualification who have knowledge, understanding and experience of working with Māori or Pasifika communities and want to teach in the early childhood sector.  Course fees and up to $30,000 over the period of study. Closes February.
Health and Sciences

Trades and Technology

  • Freemasons Willson Lewis Scholarship - offered by Manawatū Kilwinning Freemasons Lodge, Master Builders, Master Painters and UCOL to qualified tradespeople working in the Trades industry. The aim of the scholarship is to help people advance their trades career and take on more responsibility in the workplace by learning new business skills.

    Scholarship: up to $6000.

Māori & Pasifika Students

Female Students

  • Graduate Women Manawatu Charitable Trust Award - available to female students enrolled in a full-time degree course. High academic achievement is a key criteria. $6000. Closes 7th June.
  • New Horizons for Women Trust's Second Chance Education Training Awards - Multiple awards are available to female students who do not already have a tertiary qualification. Awards range from $1000 - $4000. 
  • Post-Young Trades and Enterprise award: Offered for the first time in 2022, the Post-Young Trades and Enterprise award is for a woman under the age of 30, for study towards a trade qualification or apprenticeship. 2x $3,000 awards. Application window: 1 March – 15 April.
  • Women in Audio award: The purpose of this award is to support women in music creation and encourage women in technical roles in the music industry. The award funds provide financial support for a woman studying or starting out in their audio engineering or music production career so they can buy equipment and software to build an 'audio toolkit'. $2,000. Application window: 1 March – 15 April.
  • Teupoko'ina Utanga Morgan Memorial Second-chance Education Award: The Teupoko'ina Utanga Morgan Memorial Second-chance Education Award is for a Pasifika woman who is studying towards a qualification in early childhood education. 1x $3,000. Application deadline: 15 April.
  • Inspiring Women in IT award: The purpose of the 'Inspiring Women in IT' award is to support women aged over 25 studying or training towards a career in information technology. $1,000. Application window: 1 March – 15 April.

General Scholarships

Female students

  • Sir Robert Jones Refugee Daughters' Scholarship - available to young women from refugee backgrounds to complete a tertiary qualification. Tuition fees will be paid in full through to degree attainment, subject to satisfactory examination results. Hostel accommodation will be paid for the first two years of study if the student attends a tertiary institution outside their home town.
  • Betty Loughhead Soroptimist Scholarship - available to female students who are New Zealand citizens aged at least 25 years as of 2019, enrolled in study at UCOL, with a proven record of academic achievement. Application is closed now.

General Scholarships

  • Colleen McPherson Memorial Grant - available to a UCOL student who has a disability or who has a dependant with a disability, and is facing additional costs or exceptional circumstances. $1000.
  • UCOL Scholarship for Effort and Achievement - available to a dedicated UCOL student who has demonstrated academic effort and achievement (not necessarily a 'straight A' student). $1000.
  • Andrew Cliff Award - a UCOL staff member must nominate applicants. It's aimed at students who have demonstrated a willingness to support and aid others with their course of study. Up to $1000. Applications close 27 October 2022.

General Scholarships

  • One Choice Future Grant: The $5000 grant is awarded to one eligible student a year. The applicant should have enrolled full-time in an accredited New Zealand Tertiary Education Institution and be studying for a certificate, diploma, degree or traineeship in any of the following areas: business, finance, medicine, healthcare, specialist healthcare.
Trades and Technology

  • Ann Sinclair Tertiary Farming and Agricultural Study Funding - available to farming studies students for education, travel and accommodation expenses.  Applications close 31 October each year.
  • The Hi-Tech Foundation Scholarship: Each year 'He Whetū Mārama Ngā Karahipi / Leading Light Scholarship Programme’ provides five successful applicants will be awarded up to $5000 each to cover their tuition and living costs. The application closes on October each year.
Female Students

  • GCSB STEM Scholarship for Women - Open to female students (second year and above) studying Science (e.g. IT related), Technology, Engineering or Mathematics. $10,000. Closes 1st October. 

Māori & Pasifika Students

  • Māori CPA Australia Scholarship - available to Māori students with the best-qualified applications based on tertiary academic results and will assist recipients to meet education requirements needed to attain CPA status.
