UCOL values the growth and success of its academic staff. We do this by in a number of days.
Te Atakura
All our teaching staff are partnered with a Te Atakura coach to help them reflect on their practice and pull our Te Atakura values into their teaching environment. This improves teacher capability, the system/structures that support teaching and learning, and most importantly, it improves our students’ experience and achievement outcomes.
Professional Development
- 10 days of agreed professional development leave per year
- A regular series of professional development workshops on a variety of professional practice topics
- Annual Staff Symposium organized by UCOL for all staff
A Connected Workplace
There is a strong connection between staff and senior management at UCOL with monthly discussions on each campus led by Chief Executive Linda Sissons, and an annual Staff Welcome Day to set the scene for the year. We also have a shared intranet to help keep each other in the loop on what’s happening on campuses, and a number of other communications that are shared across the whole UCOL whānau.
Teacher Induction
Whilst UCOL prefers that teaching staff hold an adult teaching qualification, we understand that this is not always possible. Newly appointed academic staff who do not hold such a qualification will be enrolled in a formal programme of study to complete UCOL’s preferred tertiary teaching qualification,
New Zealand Certificate in Adult and Tertiary Teaching and/or the New Zealand Certificate in Adult Literacy & Numeracy Education (Vocational/Workplace).
We also have a new employee orientation programme designed for our staff who are new to UCOL, so that they get started at UCOL in the best possible way. This includes a pōwhiri or mihi whakatau, joined by co-workers from across the campus. This is also where they are first introduced to Te Atakura, UCOL’s unique learning approach.
Teaching staff attend for a whole day and participate in additional orientation programmes, learning about teaching strategies, technology in teaching, and assessment and moderation.
