New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 3) (General)

From 2023, UCOL and the programme you have enrolled in will become part of Te Pūkenga. So, if you join UCOL in 2023, you will be awarded Te Pūkenga certification. And, if you are a current learner graduating in 2023, you will be awarded a co-branded certificate.

This programme consist 60 credits.  The course includes;

Reading Level 3 General (15 Credits)
You will learn to read, understand and provide a response to a range of texts (graded readers, articles) on familiar topics.

Writing Level 3 General (15 Credits)
You will learn to write comprehensible, connected texts for familiar and predictable purposes (book reviews, letters) with reasonable linguistic accuracy.

Listening Level 3 General (15 Credits)
You will learn to understand the main points and key supporting detail in extended oral interaction (conversations, interviews) on a range of familiar topics.

Speaking Level 3 General (15 Credits)
You will learn to speak with some coherence, fluency and confidence to exchange personal information and opinions on familiar topics.

New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 2) 

OR,

equivalent skills and knowledge such as IELTS 4.5 (or equivalent including TOEFL).  IELTS scores used must be taken from a single IELTS Test Report Form (i.e. combining scores from more than one test is not permissible). UCOL is a TOEFL iBT testing centre.

A diagnostic test may be used to identify the Level at which domestic students for whom English is not their first language and international students already in New Zealand should begin studying.

All students are encouraged to access support and guidance to improve study, research and academic skills.

This course is free for New Zealand domestic students and refugees.

ILN Refugee English funding
Note that a learner may only be re-enrolled in an ILN Refugee English funded provision for a period of three years. That is, enrolments/re-enrolments of an individual learner (in the same or different qualifications) may be non-consecutive, and the sum total duration of those enrolments/re-enrolments may be up to 36 months).

Recognition of prior learning
Applications for Recognition of Prior Learning, including Cross Credit, Credit Transfer and Assessment of Prior Learning may be made on the Recognition of Prior Learning Form where a student believes all learning outcomes for a course have already been met. Applications will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis in accordance with the UCOL Academic Statute and other relevant policies and procedures.

Application checklist
It will make the process easier if you prepare the following before you apply:

• National Student Number (NSN) (If you don't have a NSN, you may request one from NZQA, or you can supply a verified copy of your birth certificate, passport or Whakapapa statement.)
• Evidence of your highest level of academic achievement (and evidence of prior learning, if applicable)
• Evidence that you meet the entry requirements of the programme
• Check if you're eligible for additional support or a scholarship. If you're 19 years or younger, you may be eligible to enrol in one of our free Youth Transition programmes.
