This adult teaching qualification is ideal for individuals who facilitate in community education, teach at a polytechnic or private teaching establishment, or if you are a workplace trainer.

New Zealand Certificate in Adult and Tertiary Teaching is structured for direct application to teaching practice.
 
This programme provides you with opportunity to build on your understanding of educational theory and ideas through experience with, and critical reflection of, a repertoire of strategies for use in teaching and learning, assessment and programme design.

From 2023, UCOL and the programme you have enrolled in will become part of Te Pūkenga. So, if you join UCOL in 2023, you will be awarded Te Pūkenga certification. And, if you are a current learner graduating in 2023, you will be awarded a co-branded certificate.

This programme consist of 60 credits. The courses includes:

Learner-Centred Practice (20 Credits)
Become a teacher who knows how to get the most out of their students. Help your students to be empowered and walk away achieving their learning goals. Gain the latest techniques in lesson planning, and the expertise to approach adult teaching with enthusiasm and understanding.

Teaching Approaches for Learner Success (10 Credits)
Learn the strategies to teach a diverse range of learners and abilities. Your studies will cover different teaching approaches including cooperative learning, project-based learning, and blended learning. You'll also learn the techniques for teaching youth, special needs and those with learning difficulties.

Assessment and Moderation (15 Credits)
Learn how to use assessments to improve your teaching methods and ultimately increase success rates with your students. Also maximise the effectiveness of your assessments with a robust moderation process.

Perspectives on Teaching and Learning (15 Credits)
Learn how to recognise and articulate how your learning philosophy influences your teaching practices. Understand which teaching style to use depending on the student’s needs and abilities. Learn teaching strategies for a diverse range of learners.

 Domestic Entry Requirements

NCEA Level 2 

During this course you need to ensure you have access to learners so you can deliver your session, and an observation can be completed, as part of the assessment requirements.You must also be working with learners in a post‐secondary environment and must meet the requirements of the Vulnerable Children Act 2014.
 
English language proficiency
If English is not your first language, you must also demonstrate English language skills equivalent to an IELTS score or equivalent, including TOEFL. Students with NCEA Level 3 University Entrance are not required to provide evidence of English Language Skills. Contact the info centre for more details. UCOL is a TOEFL testing centre.

Work experience
You will need to be in a teaching role to complete this qualification. During your studies your will deliver sessions under observation. You must be working with learners in a post‐secondary environment and must meet the requirements of the Vulnerable Children Act 2014.

Fees
The full qualification fee for 2021 is $2,380.26, however you can also study the individual courses:

  • Learner-Centred Practice $801.07
  • Teaching Approaches for Learner Success $382.99
  • Assessment and Moderation $598.10
  • Perspectives on Learning $598.10

Application checklist
It will make the process easier if you prepare the following before you apply:

  • National Student Number (NSN) (If you don't have a NSN, you may request one from NZQA, or you can supply a verified copy of your birth certificate, passport or Whakapapa statement.)
  • Evidence of your highest level of academic achievement (and evidence of prior learning, if applicable)
  • Evidence that you meet the entry requirements of the programme

Note that you will need to provide any verified documents in person, via post or email.

Recognition of prior learning
Applications for Recognition of Prior Learning, including Cross Credit, Credit Transfer and Assessment of Prior Learning may be made on the Recognition of Prior Learning Form where a student believes all learning outcomes for a course or unit standards have already been met.

Students who have a New Zealand Certificate in Adult Literacy and Numeracy Education (through TANZ eCampus or Training For You) can apply to have the first course of the NZ Cert in Adult  and Tertiary Teaching L5 - Learner centred Practice  (20 credits) of could be credited to them.

 Accreditation

The programme is approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority under the provisions of the Education and Training Act 2020, and Universal College of Learning Limited, a subsidiary of Te Pūkenga is accredited to teach it.
