UCOL’s MIG, TIG, OAW and Arc Welding (Night Class Welding) is an introductory programme to upskill basic welding techniques with aluminium, stainless steel and steel.

Are you interested in finding out what welding is all about? Or do you hobby around at home or on the farm with a welder but would like to know the finer details to get better results? 

UCOL’s MIG, TIG, OAW and Arc Welding (Night Class Welding) programme will help you learn the basics and sharpen your welding skills. The programme can also be used as a welding refresher or towards professional development.

The welding is performed on different thickness low carbon steel,  and weld joints, mainly in the down hand, (flat) position.

Demonstrations are based around:

  • MMAW (Stick welding)
  • GMAW (MIG welding)
  • GTAW (TIG welding is taught and practical for students, working with stainless steel and/or aluminium)

The course provides students with more insight/practical experience with the different welding processes, machines, metals, problem solving and avoiding weld defects. As well as the above mentioned welding processes, it is possible to have demonstrations/practical activities organised with oxy-acetylene welding/cutting or plasma cutting.

This welding course is structured around a limited number of students and is currently offered three times a year. If a higher level of training and or welding certificate training is required then this may be offered at a later stage.

From 2023, UCOL and the programme you have enrolled in will become part of Te Pūkenga. So, if you join UCOL in 2023, you will be awarded Te Pūkenga certification. And, if you are a current learner graduating in 2023, you will be awarded a co-branded certificate.

This programme covers:

  • First night: Health & Safety and Manual Metal Arc Welding
  • Second night: Gas Metal Arc Welding
  • Third night: Gas Tungsten Arc Welding
  • Fourth night: Oxy/Acetylene Welding/Cutting

The remaining four nights will cover all of the above taking into consideration individual interests. You are also welcome to bring in manageable small projects. Please enquire with the lecturer first.

 Domestic Entry Requirements

Open entry.

English language proficiency
If English is not your first language, you must also demonstrate English language skills equivalent to an IELTS or equivalent, including TOEFL. Contact the info centre for more details. UCOL is a TOEFL testing centre.

 Advice & Guidance

You must supply your own steel cap boots and 100% cotton overalls. UCOL will supply you with a welding helmet, welding gloves, ear muffs and safety glasses for the duration of the programme.

 

 Accreditation

The programme is approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority under the provisions of the Education and Training Act 2020, and Universal College of Learning Limited, a subsidiary of Te Pūkenga is accredited to teach it.
