Hairdressing Student

Gypsy Maulder always had a knack for styling hair, and after completing UCOL’s NZ Certificate in Hairdressing (Salon Support) she’s taken the first big step towards a career.

“I always wanted to be a hairdresser, and thought this would be a good chance to learn in a good environment with supportive lecturers,” says Gypsy.

Gypsy says her lecturers at the UCOL campus in Masterton bring a wealth of industry knowledge to the salon, and they’re always close by if she needs help while working with a client.

“It’s cool being able to learn new things in a salon environment. You get a lot of one on one time with lecturers, which makes it easier to learn.”

One of the highlights for Gypsy was UCOL’s annual History of Hair competition, which involves students researching and recreating a hairstyle from a particular era or culture. Gypsy won an award for her research portfolio for her 18th century style.

Now studying UCOL’s NZ Certificate in Hairdressing (Emerging Stylist), Gypsy is looking forward to learning more about cutting and perming, while also learning more advanced colouring techniques.

“Colouring was a highlight for me in the first year, and I really liked learning how to use foils.”

After she finishes her studies, Gypsy hopes to work in a salon that offers a wide variety of services so she can keep expanding her skillset.
