Designed for people who are a part of a community health team, this microcredential will provide you with the latest knowledge and experience in diabetes prevention and management. Plus, you’ll learn about  intervention strategies for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes.

 Course Hours & Duration

This programme runs for 20 weeks, including 2 holiday weeks.

Per week, your learning will include approximately:

Lectures, tutorials and/or online recordings.

Study Time
3 hrs

Study in your own time.


 Career & Study Outcomes

On completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Act as a health coach in the area of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes.
  • Empower community members to independently manage diabetes through the use of education and otivational/change behaviour strategies.

This programme also aims to enable students to develop the literacy skills relevant for further study into:

  • NZ Certificates or Diplomas in Community/Health/Wellbeing (Levels 3-6)
  • Or

  • Bachelor degrees in Community/Health/Wellbeing (Level 7)

This programme consist of 15 credits.

Community Engagement: “Cutting Diabetes Risk In Half” Building Health Habits That Last A Lifetime (15 Credits)

The learning outcomes:

  • Facilitate change initiatives for diabetes interventions.
  • Interpret changes in physical and mental wellbeing following intervention.
  • Respond to opportunities for education, intervention, and behaviour change in diabetes management.

 Advice & Guidance

All students are encouraged to access support and guidance to improve study, research and academic skills. Students who do not have prior health qualifications or experience in type 2 diabetes care are advised first to complete Stay Well to Stay Strong Microcredential (Level 3).

 Accreditation

The programme is approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority under the provisions of the Education and Training Act 2020, and Universal College of Learning Limited, a subsidiary of Te Pūkenga is accredited to teach it.
