Are you interested in the fields of health and wellness? Join UCOL's Academy Health Programme to learn core concepts and get a taste of the health industry. You will have the opportunity to work towards NCEA Level 3 whilst exploring the technical skills required to staircase into a number of health-related careers. 

You will learn about:

  • Anatomy and biology
  • Health issues in New Zealand
  • Health practices currently used in New Zealand
  • Ethical issues in relation to well-being 
  • The four key dimensions of hauora
  • First Aid

 Career & Study Outcomes

Successful completion of UCOL's Academy Health Programme is the first step in a journey. Equipped with new skills and a taste for the industry, you will know what you need to do to pursue a career in health and wellbeing as a lab technician, researcher, medical imaging specialist, nurse, massage therapist, pharmacist, dietician, personal trainer, sport and exercise physiologist or rehabilitation expert. If this is for you, you can undertake further tertiary studies in:

This programme comprises 27 Credits.

Unit Standard 27457 (Level 3) (Version 4) (6 Credits)
Describe the anatomy and physiology of systems and associated organs of the human body.

AS 91461 (Level 3) (Version 3) (5 Credits)
Analyse a New Zealand Health Issue.

AS 91463 (Level 3) (Version 2) (5 Credits)
Evaluate health practices currently used in New Zealand.

AS 91464 (Level 3) (Version 2) (4 Credits)
Analyse a contemporary ethical issue in relation to well-being.

Unit Standard 18352 (Level 3) (Version 5) (3 Credits)
Explain four key dimensions of hauora.

Unit Standard 6400 (Level 3) (Version 6) (2 Credits)
Manage first aid in an emergency situation.

Unit Standard 6401 (Level 2) (Version 6) (1 Credits)
Provide first aid.

Unit Standard 6402 (Level 1) (Version 8) (1 Credits)
Provide basic first aid.

 Domestic Entry Requirements

For year 11 - 13 secondary school students (NZ Citizens, permanent residents or students with an applicable visa allowing them to be enrolled in a secondary school).

Applications are to be received from participating schools.

Fees-free when criteria are met. 

Transport
Transport assistance is available if you meet the criteria.

Attendance expectations
Students must maintain appropriate attendance at both secondary school and Academy to remain enrolled in the Academy Programme.

There are no additional costs associated with this programme. Simply, bring a pen, paper and your lunch each week.
